UNITS OF STUDY

Anatomy & Physiology Body Structure

Description: A fundamental component of all major modalities, this subject will teach you an overview of the fundamental Anatomy of Body Structures. This course will focus on the anatomy of the external body structures including the skin and accessory structures, bones of the skeleton, joints and the skeletal muscles.

Learning Hours: Learning hours are inclusive of all supervised and prescribed activities throughout the duration of this unit of study. These may include lectures, on-line tasks, forums, assessments, prescribed reading, research, assignments and activities.

Assessment
This unit is assessed by:

  • Two on-line quizzes

Swedish Massage

Description: Swedish massage is an introduction to general massage that employs the fundamental manipulations (techniques) applied to the soft tissues of the body. Swedish massage forms the underpinning practical and theoretical knowledge for Remedial Massage 1 & 2. In this unit of study you will learn the basic techniques, ethical behaviour and boundaries, draping, contraindications, history and definition of
massage etc. Participants on finishing this unit of study should be competent in all areas of general massage.

Learning Hours: Learning hours are inclusive of all supervised and prescribed activities throughout the duration of this unit of study. These may include lectures, on-line tasks, forums, assessments, prescribed reading, research, assignments and activities.

Assessment
This unit is assessed by:

  • Practical assessment tasks
  • Five body logs
  • One on-line quiz

Pre-requisites: Nil.

Co-requisites: Nil.
Remedial Massage

Description:  This unit of study will enhance the skills and knowledge learnt in Swedish Massage and introduces the concepts of Remedial Massage. You will learn advanced massage techniques, case history taking, visual assessment, identification of contraindications and referral protocols. The skills and knowledge gained will allow you to integrate them with your Swedish massage techniques allowing you to treat some common soft tissue techniques.

Learning Hours: Learning hours are inclusive of all supervised and prescribed activities throughout the duration of this unit of study. These may include lectures, on-line tasks, forums, assessments, prescribed reading, research, assignments and activities.

Assessment
This unit is assessed by:

  • Practical assessment tasks
  • Five body logs
  • One on-line quiz

Pre-requisites: Swedish Massage; Anatomy & Physiology Body Structure.

Co-requisites: Nil.
Safe Practices

Description:  This unit incorporates the skills and knowledge required to comply with infection control policies and procedures and contribute to WHS processes.

Learning Hours: Learning hours are inclusive of all supervised and prescribed activities throughout the duration of this unit of study. These may include lectures, on-line tasks, forums, assessments, prescribed reading, research, assignments and activities.

Assessment
This unit is assessed by:

  • One on-line quiz

Functional Anatomy

Description: The focus of this one day unit is to identify the major boney landmarks on the body using palpation and visual assessment techniques. This unit will provide the anatomical knowledge and biomechanical principles related to the human skeletal system.

Clinical Practice A (Massage)

Description: Student training clinic provides an environment for the transition from student to competent Health Care professional. This is achieved in the following ways:
•Integrating knowledge and skills, training in a live clinical setting.
•Supporting students to take a professional role whilst being supported by experienced practitioners.
•Allowing students to undertake the challenges of clinical work within the supervision safety net provided by the training Clinic
To truly facilitate effective transition all students are encouraged to behave as they would in their own Clinic.

Assessment
This unit is assessed by:

  • Ongoing practical assessment tasks

Pre-requisites: Swedish Massage, Anatomy & Physiology (Body Structure), Remedial Massage 1, Safe Practices

Co-requisites: Remedial Massage 2

 
Clinical Practice B (Massage)

Description: Student training clinic provides an environment for the transition from student to competent Health Care professional. This is achieved in the following ways:
•Integrating knowledge and skills, training in a live clinical setting.
•Supporting students to take a professional role whilst being supported by experienced practitioners.
•Allowing students to undertake the challenges of clinical work within the supervision safety net provided by the training Clinic
To truly facilitate effective transition all students are encouraged to behave as they would in their own Clinic.

Assessment
This unit is assessed by:

  • Ongoing practical assessment tasks
